My instant city. | January 28, 2010 | Comments (7)

This week has flown by and dragged on at the same time, hasn’t it? In any case, it’s just about Friday and I can get down with that. Today, I saw a man just hanging out with his chicken (like, an actual living chicken) on Van Ness Avenue, leaning against a street sign wanting money or something and catching some of the fleeting sunshine we had today after days and days of rain or drizzle or haze or fog or slick, slick wet.

It was especially strange because I am in the middle of a short story collection called Instant City (it’s Issue No. 6 and I picked it up from one of my favorite vintage / antique shops, Gypsy Honeymoon – the black dress in the back would fit me perfectly, I can tell just by looking at it and it is a DREAM made of wondrous elegance and vaporous black chiffon. The lady who owns or runs it or both has little birdies in there chirping happily and she is a very sweet sort of flower child – Stevie Nicks type), by and about San Francisco writers, and most of the vignettes feature these sort of random, only-in-San-Francisco scenes and stolen moments. So much so that before I told this story I had to really think about whether or not I read it or truly saw them, but I promise you that I saw them with my own eyes.

On that note, I would like to know if it’s wrong of me to have zero desire to eat at that Tommy’s Sandwich Joint (Joynt?).

BACK TO THE CLOTHES. I love these shoes. I love these socks. They serve no practical purpose, in fact, they’re kind of scratchy and that irritates me, but they’re so damn sassy. Here’s the modcloth.com Crewel scarf again, this time paired with a kicky little suede + fringe Lonesome Dove pendant in a forest green, and this amazing black satchel that I am newly in love with. My new bangs and I got into a bit of a tussle this morning, clearly, and they went all Peggy from Mad Men on me (damn cowlick), but I am mostly pleased!

So, who’s got big plans this weekend? We have none, nada, which is spectacular as we’re going to need lots of R&R before our next round of fabulous house guests arrive next weekend. It will be epic.

Lady in red. | February 15, 2009 | Comments (8)

dsc03782 dsc03824 dsc03831 dsc03803 dsc03834 dsc03856 dsc03793

When: Sunday, Feb. 15th, 2009.

What: High-waisted metallic skirt from Target, striped sleeveless blouse by Georgiou Studio, vintage woven metallic belt and metallic chevron knee-high socks from Barney’s. Vintage I.Magnin coat and bag by Emilie M.

Confession: M & I had a total blast at Cockblock last night. It was fantastic. I drank 84,000 recession-priced Jameson & gingers, we danced like filthy rotten sluts (she was packing and I was very much enjoying that fact) and we were pleased with the number of fancy tomboys wearing bowties or neck ties with fancy sweater combos. I hope everyone else had a nice Valentine’s Day!

Today, when I finally woke up at noon to my tomboy setting a hot cup of perfect coffee down next to me in bed, the last thing I wanted to do was get into the shower to head back into the city for more debauchery, but that I did. We did. It was Salsa Sunday at El Rio, and people were expecting us! After ordering a coke and some Cheetos (shut up) I was good as new. We took over the back room, including the DJ tables, and ended up across the street at El Patio for some delicious El Salvadorian food. So good. So much fun.

Miss Miss. | November 11, 2008 | Comments (0)

dsc05288 dsc05195 dsc05282 dsc05231 dsc05244

When: Tuesday, Nov. 11th, 2008.

What: Gray sweater with fancy black lace and matching scarf by Hazel from Lounge in Soho, black dress from H&M, vintage scarf from my mom, gray chevron knee socks from Barney’s. Boots by Restricted from piperlime.com.

Scent: Today I am wearing Figue Amère from Miller Harris. It’s described as being “curious contrast of fleshy fruit with astringent salt.” When I put it on I thought that I was headed for tragic old lady perfume territory, but within an hour it evolved into something, yes, juicy and clean and salty all at once.

Confession: When I stole borrowed this from my mom for the first time almost twenty years ago, it never occurred to me that I’d one day rock it so casually on a blustery day at work. It’s delicate, with a black rose pattern and stretches over seven feet from one end to the other, with silver thread running throughout the entire scarf. It’s really beautiful and I’ve always loved it. In fact, I’m amazed it’s lasted this long. (Few things are truly SBJ-proof).

I’ve mostly used it the way my mother once did – as a shawl for covering up a evening gown or cocktail dress for a fancy night out. But I really love it like this, too. I feel like with the silver in the awesome chevron of these knee-high socks, I should have worn my robo-femme boots instead, but this outfit still makes me happy!

PS. I am going to try v. hard to keep consistent with the new Scent section whenever I can. Thanks, Viper, for the suggestion. This post is also named after my new favorite song, Miss Miss, by Figurine. Listen for free here!

Wearing my skirt like a flag. | August 14, 2008 | Comments (0)

When: Monday, August 4th, 2008.

What: Creamy chiffon and sheer black ribbon number from BCBG Max Azria, vintage cummerbund by Milor, bronze and black velvet t-strap peep-toe pumps by Bronx. Thrifted onyx pendant and Victorian-inspired Silver Crane Sterling earrings. Sassy black clutch from M’s lil sis.

Confession: This outfit was from our last night in Puerto Rico. Last of the series, y’all! CRY WITH ME! (Except YAY because I have a few shipments en route with new goodies to share with y’all, from Barney’s and Target and Chosen Stock.)

Here are a few just-for-fun PR tourist shots, ooh la la:

Here is a beautiful mossy green door with a fancy toad door knocker. Perhaps it is even a coqui. Anyway, I saw it and fell in love and had to faux-kiss it, like a deranged princess looking for her prince in unconventional places.

Speaking of princesses, here is the lovely La Princesa fountain. I blame the XXX cocktails at SoFo’s Dragonfly (Ketel One Citreon, Sour Apple Fest, Triple Sec w/ fresh lemon-lime juice and splash of cran) and M for making me dance on it. Then there’s the statue by the ominous, industrial iron spikes.
