Good evening to all. I’ve been a bit MIA due to time constraints, exhaustion and a jam-packed social calendar. Since I last posted, I’ve partied at Lush and a luxe lesbian party with dear friends, cried my face off at the Stars show, done quite a fair amount of shopping and fetched the dry cleaning, welcomed a Canadian tomboy to the San Francisco Bay Area, started a new job, celebrated Father’s Day with M and the family out of town, finished reading one book and started another.

Additionally, my new schedule is thoroughly kicking my ass, despite being tremendously worth it in absolutely every possible way. My nightly sleep has been reduced by at least one-fourth and no amount of caffeine seems to do the trick. (Plus, if anyone knows of a reputable threader in the Embarcadero or Financial districts of San Francisco, for the love of God share her with me. I scarcely have time to pick up my new order of contact lenses and new checks from the bank, let alone tend to my poor, poor eyebrows.)

Finally, M’s birthday is this Friday, so we’ve got some serious celebrating to do. Starting tomorrow night. Without our pants on, of course.

2010: NO PANTS!

Blouse: Calvin Klein
Slacks: Express Design Studio
Wingtip Pumps: Franco Sarto
Oversized Lace + Pearl Necklace: Spoiled! Boutique (Oakland)

This outfit is a stark departure from last Friday night’s black and tan (like the milkshake!) bandage dress by Bebe, but more on that later.

Femme Confession: Lord have mercy, what a weekend. After my last blog post on Friday night, I:

  • Threw a hissyfit on the internets because no one would go with me to Meet In The Middle in Fresno; felt better after I saw that a National March For Equality is planned for October in Washington, DC, felt better after I received a fantastic thank you email from Michael Rowe himself, felt better after a dear friend was inspired to write an article after reading my blog.
  • Went on another fabulous SF date with the tomboy on Saturday night – drinks and pool at El Rio for the SF Dyke March benefit (the new design is so great!), followed by a stop at Luka’s in Oakland for wondrous dinner of seared halibut and lamb chops drowning in the most amazing gravy the consistency of broth atop a pillow of mashed potatoes, with their signature chocolate fondant to-go!
  • Found a pair of ancient prescription contacts in the earthquake kit, put them in, suffered through wear for appx. 4-6 hours despite the fact that they felt sort of like having an itchy sweater ON YOUR EYES, took them out. Riveting stuff, I know.
  • Met with friends for a Bon Voyage brunch at T-Rex in Berkeley before one of them is off to Turkmenistan for two whole months (want to eat their petite beignets every day for ever and ever, amen). Conned my girls into seeing a matinee of Star Trek, which was surprisingly fantastic. I am not at all a Star Trek fan, but really enjoyed all of the awesome space explosions and black holes and terrible monsters and shit.

Tomboy Confession: Today I learned that Spock is a fucking badass and I have Skinny to thank! I want to watch all the episodes ever made of Star Trek. YES! I hope he beats up a lot of loudmouths then goes back to being quiet and creepy! I told Skinny I am going to cut my hair like him, and now she’s so scared!*

*Hi, this is Skinny. I assure you that there will be NO photographs of M with atrocious Spock hair INCLUDING the Betty Paige bangs because that would be wrongful and also grounds for divorce. Such as.

The femme you wish your mother warned you about. | February 23, 2009 | Comments (8)

dsc047434 dsc047371 dsc04752

When: Monday, Feb. 23rd, 2009.

What: James Jeans, H&M dress-as-top, white leather motorcycle jacket from Bebe. Black and white silk scarf from Italy, courtesy of my BFF’s travels there years ago. Stiletto boots from Charles David. (Come back, Butane! I ? you!) Classic silver watch by Guess.

Confession: My new job is making me totally geek out all over again. I bet the last thing y’all would expect is that I previously managed not one, but TWO organization’s networks, IT departments and myriad databases! Some things you never really shake, like being a Linux geek who once only ever used command-line email clients, bits of SQL, the thrill of a perfectly written query and wanting to lick your monitor because your outputs are so so so fucking pretty.  Anyway, after all that having gone dormant in recent years, just like that it’s like BOOM! Oh hai. U R such a fucken nerd!

Scent: Parfumerie Generale’s Private Collection Psychotrope, with notes of cyclamen, violet, jasmine, lilac, woods, black leather, and musk. When you open it up and apply it, it kind of stalk-stomps out of its glass in a dark floral cloud. Shit is moody. It’s supposed to be a flower with leather petals, or some sort leather core tightly wrapped in protective flowers, but the sweetness is lost on my skin, and all that’s left is the leather and stern, powdery violet. M said it smelled like a flower market on my neck, but on my wrists it smelled “like a flower market forgotten in the bottom of someone’s drawer.” The petite was not a fan either! I envy women who can wear this with the sweetness it was meant to embody!

PS. The name of this post came from a very good old friend of mine who is no longer a friend of mine. It stuck. She didn’t! I rather like it. (The quote, that is.) It suits me, although I’m not even sure what one’s mother would say about me, in the way of warnings.

Bois Farine, my kimono and new workspace. | February 20, 2009 | Comments (11)

dsc043481 dsc043571 dsc044041 dsc043811

When: Friday, Feb. 20th, 2009.

What: James Jeans, white thermal from The Gap, striped corduroy and taffeta cropped jacket by Avocado. Scarf from Old San Juan boutique, gray booties by Bebe.

Scent: Bois Farine by L’Artisan Parfumeur. Hells bells, I don’t even know what to make of this scent. I don’t like it at all, but it intrigues me. What IS that? Why? It’s all playdoh and imitation vanilla at the beginning, and it takes its sweet molasses ass time drying down to something mildly tolerable, but still…off. There’s a subtle sweetness and heavy woodiness and something foody, which is consistent with reviews by others. The notes are fennel seed, white iris, white cedar, sandalwood, benzoin, gaiacwood and farine flower. I am not for it and it shows real true dedication that I put it on twice just to give y’all this review, because I really and truly cannot stand it. Well!

Confession: I was at my fancy new job today. At home. In my kimono. All day long. It was fabulous. M worked from home, too, so here we were like two sickeningly happy peas in a pod! Hurrah! Here are some photos of my new “office” and the gorgeous blue kimono robe. Also, some short stacks of inspiration that I like to keep handy.

I’m experimenting with a new format! Some time ago, the snapshots on wordpress.com suddenly disabled, preventing y’all from clicking on new pics to get more detail. Some readers complained that they couldn’t see the awesomeness closer up, and that made me sad. As a result, instead of posting a ton of wee pics, I’m going to try and post only 3-4 larger ones. I hope that helps!

Anyway, take the poll below and let me know if you like it!

Sweet Sunday. | November 16, 2008 | Comments (0)

dsc05513 dsc05525 dsc05543 dsc05548 dsc05533

When: Sunday, Nov. 16th, 2008.

What: Black shirt dress by Rogan Gregory for GO Int’l @ Target, thrifted sheer scarf as belt, gray calfskin booties by Bebe. Feather earrings from Soho street vendor, pendant from Claire’s.

Confession: Nothing to report, other than the fact that I had a fantastic Sunday. 1.5 hr. massage with a wonderful new masseuse and a lively dinner with M’s longtime friends, who were in town for a visit this weekend. The dinner? A quiet, lovely restaurant overlooking the water…I had an amazing Kobe beef meatloaf wrapped in pepper bacon with a red-wine mushroom sauce and ginger lime “peartini.” We shared a delicious flight of tawny port wine and baby beignets for dessert.
