Spring has sprung! | February 13, 2010 | Comments (5)

Praise Dolly! The sun came out in a glorious way today! Not in that wintry, deceptive, incapable-of-penetrating-the-chill way, but in an honest-to-God Springtime sort of way. It was lovely. To be completely honest, I’ve been wearing this dress around the house like a muumuu or house dress, or a hearty old slip, so when it was time to put on proper clothes, I just tossed on the leggings and jacket and scooped my hair into a ponytail. Voila! It felt sinful and fantastic.

When we stepped out onto our little street to take these photos (M is really coming into her own as a style photographer), the kittens were out, the trees were green, bumblebees buzzed, I sipped my whiskey sour and reapplied my very red Besame lipstick with very red nails. Spring and I went at it hot and heavy. Alas, I fear the cold will come and go until it warms back up in earnest, but that’s OK. Today was wonderful.

So, spit it out! What are your big Valentine’s Day plans? We’re going to be lazy bears until the early evening, with small bites and cocktails at Annabelle’s and then to a “Share The Love” party being thrown by a friend of hers and her loverbird. It should be dreamy!

Of course, FFAF wouldn’t even be worth if not for y’all, so here’s a big wet lipstick-y femme kiss from me to you! XO!

There are no rules. | February 12, 2010 | Comments (3)

It is Friday! Pardon my weeklong absence, dear readers. I’ve missed you!

We are upon a three-day holiday weekend, which is wonderful because I’ve scarcely had time enough to recover from the last.

Last night M & I celebrated five years, to the day, of the exact night that we met, with French 75s and premature Valentine’s Day candies.

Yesterday morning I woke up (late, of course, bangs sticking straight up, shuffling sleepily from the bedroom to the french press and my – well, M’s – laptop) to a world without Lee Alexander McQueen, a true genius, a would-be visionary, a brilliant legend. Ever the late bloomer, I explained to a dear friend that it wasn’t until it dawned on me that I was a lesbian, at long last in my very early twenties, when I truly became interested in fashion. Not in any deliberate, studied way, at least not that I can remember. So it’s really just the last decade or so that I have lived with this heightened sense of it all, the awe and skepticism and obscurity and blatantness.

It is more than enough time to recognize that the man was really and truly something else. It’s not fair to lose that mind and all the incredible, staggering, in-your-face beauty it produced. Loving what he made often required you to bend and twist your mind in ways other designers haven’t and won’t, and I’ll miss it all dearly.

You were beautiful and terrible, McQueen.

Y’all love hard on Sunday, you hear?!?!

Because I said so.

PS. Silly me. The ring is also Laundry by Shelli Segal and the gloves are vintage.

Lady in red. | February 15, 2009 | Comments (8)

dsc03782 dsc03824 dsc03831 dsc03803 dsc03834 dsc03856 dsc03793

When: Sunday, Feb. 15th, 2009.

What: High-waisted metallic skirt from Target, striped sleeveless blouse by Georgiou Studio, vintage woven metallic belt and metallic chevron knee-high socks from Barney’s. Vintage I.Magnin coat and bag by Emilie M.

Confession: M & I had a total blast at Cockblock last night. It was fantastic. I drank 84,000 recession-priced Jameson & gingers, we danced like filthy rotten sluts (she was packing and I was very much enjoying that fact) and we were pleased with the number of fancy tomboys wearing bowties or neck ties with fancy sweater combos. I hope everyone else had a nice Valentine’s Day!

Today, when I finally woke up at noon to my tomboy setting a hot cup of perfect coffee down next to me in bed, the last thing I wanted to do was get into the shower to head back into the city for more debauchery, but that I did. We did. It was Salsa Sunday at El Rio, and people were expecting us! After ordering a coke and some Cheetos (shut up) I was good as new. We took over the back room, including the DJ tables, and ended up across the street at El Patio for some delicious El Salvadorian food. So good. So much fun.

Stomp yr ?. | February 5, 2009 | Comments (9)

dsc02639 dsc02563 dsc02567 dsc02616 dsc02585 dsc02654 dsc02595

When: Thurs., February 5th, 2009.

What: Black dress and dark cyan suede/leather/faux snakeskin boots, H&M. Black and neon striped belt, thrifted. Dingy brown tights, Calvin Klein. Teal suede bag, modcloth.com

Confession: Holy shit, I love these H&M boots. They are new (t0 me), for $7.50. They’re super comfortable and good for stomping around, and I can’t wait to try them on with different outfits. I also love my new neon belt, it’s made out of stretchy something, maybe a nylon/cotton blend, with a silver and leather buckle. It’s not too wide, and the unexpected punch of a color I doubt I’ve ever intentionally worn makes me kind of feel like throwing a tantrum. Also, it was $1. You know you want to come thrifting with me. So bad.

Hot Mama Confession: I also found ten pristine old copies of Sweet Valley High books. ZOMG. I felt like I won the bloody lottery. I’m going to tie them up with a big, drippy pink and red ribbon and give them to the petite for Valentine’s Day! ? ? ? Dreamy, no?

Candy Confession: Those are Sixlets I’m clutching in my hot little hand. SIXLETS. So good. Maybe I’ve also eaten appx. 20 pixy sticks, who can say?
